Say no to the drama and yes to the dress

Tips and tricks to help you choose the wedding gown of your dreams

Say Yes to the Dress is a television show many are familiar with. An eager bride with a few very opinionated friends and family members attempt to buy “The Dress” with the help of a consultant who has seen it all. There’s drama, tears, and lots of advice. Buying a dress can admittedly be a bit stressful, so how can a bride-to-be reduce the anxiety of preparing for the big day? Fatima Bayram of Silk Bridal Boutique in Rochester has some great tips on how to make dress shopping more fun than frantic.

Before your appointment

• Do your research:

Look at bridal magazines, websites, and social media for inspiration. Identify your preferred style, silhouette, and neckline.

Consider your venue, theme, and overall wedding vision.

• Set a budget:

Determine how much you’re willing to spend on your dress.

Keep in mind additional costs like alterations, accessories, and taxes.

• Choose your guests:

Select a small group of trusted friends or family members who will offer honest feedback.

Limit the number of people to avoid overwhelming decision-making.

• Schedule appointments:

Book appointments at several bridal salons to compare options and find the perfect dress.

Be mindful of peak wedding seasons and book well in advance.

• Prepare your body:

Consider wearing shapewear or a supportive bra to get an accurate fit.

Make sure to wear nude underwear.

Wear comfortable shoes that are easy to slip on and off.

• Bring Essentials:

Bring a small notebook and pen to jot down notes and questions.

During your appointment

• Be open-minded:

Try on a variety of styles, even if they differ from your initial vision.

A consultant can offer expert advice and help you discover unexpected options.

• Trust your gut:

Listen to your instincts and choose a dress that makes you feel confident and beautiful.

Don’t let pressure from others influence your decision.

• Consider alterations:

Keep in mind that most dresses require some alterations to achieve the perfect fit.

Discuss any necessary alterations with the consultant.

• Don’t rush:

Take your time and enjoy the process of finding your dream dress.

Don’t feel pressured to decide immediately.
