There is a certain level of decadence associated with clothing from the Victorian era. Think lace day dresses and crinolines with intricate lattice-like work, heeled boots that are pointed at the toe, and the dramatic push and pull of a corset. The feeling carries through in style notes such as blood-colored lips and hair in tightly wound buns.
Once again, fashion has become enamored with this era. The Mulleavy sisters at Rodarte showcased white blouses with puffed sleeves that touched the heavens at their fall 2021 show. At Alexander McQueen, Victorian aesthetics mingled with gothic sensibility in the form of a suit with a train and slits in the sleeves. Let’s not forget the frilled necklines at Brock Collection and the winsome quality of all things Batsheva. Victorian style has also appeared on the streets. During fashion month, we saw billowy coats out in London and high-necked dresses in Paris that unfolded in waves of shimmering lace. This coming spring, why not try a midi-length, cream-colored crocheted dress to create a visual moment worthy of a Brontë novel? Or perhaps try a pair of two-toned leather boots paired with black driving gloves for a chic update on steampunk? Ultimately, this trend is all about dreaminess and looking dramatic. Don’t forget the fainting couch.
Another trend to get behind is one that’s as comfortable as it is chic: elegant knitwear. On the Fall 2021 runways, Proenza Schouler, Bottega Veneta, Altuzarra, Phillip Lim, and The Row showed soft separates and head-to-toe knits crafted with warm wools and cozy cashmere yarns. It’s a trend we’ve learned to know and love over the past year; despite their relaxed feel, these pieces certainly don’t feel dressed down. A handful of fall’s sharpest silhouettes—polo dresses, belted jackets, off-the-shoulder tops, and wide- leg trousers—are offered in soft-as-ever knits. It’s a way of dressing that’s both easy on the eyes and the wearer’s body. What could be better than slipping on a delightful, fringed midi skirt, structured bell-sleeve top, or sleeveless turtleneck dress made of fabrics that feel like your coziest loungewear? Here’s to a season of elevated ensembles that puts comfort first, a trend we can certainly get behind.
