Hello, (585) families

Managing Editor of (585) magazine, Christine Green, and her dog in Rochester, N.Y.

Welcome to the spring issue of (585) Kids! This issue is jam-packed with good stuff —camps, volunteering ideas, and a whole host of summer events and activities. While I love every article, two really stand out to me. Bruce the Bat Dog tickled my fancy to no end as a dog lover and Red Wings fan. Who doesn’t enjoy a cute doggo running around with a baseball bat?

Sarah Mead’s story about local camps that aren’t sports-heavy or focused on outdoor activity really resonated with me. My kids (now twenty-four and almost twenty-one) were anything but sporty or outdoorsy, and even today we are more likely to find them with their nose in a book or visiting a museum than on a camping trip. So when it came to summer camps they gravitated toward Writers & Books and local history camps. Camps like these suited their more reserved, cerebral natures and fostered their sense of belonging. Today, my daughter works with children as a social emotional learning coordinator at a school in Buffalo, and my son is knee deep in political science classes at SUNY Geneseo. Yes, I’m bragging a bit, but that’s a mom’s privilege, right? In any case, whether your kid is a sports champion, an artist in the making, or a little bit of both, this issue has something for you and your family.
