Holiday Craft — How to Make your Holiday a little Greener
The holidays are an especially high-waste time, with Americans throwing away 25 percent more trash during the Thanksgiving to New Year’s holiday season than at any other time of year, according to Bob Lilienfled/The Use Less Stuff Report.
If every U.S. family reused just 2 feet of holiday ribbon, the 38,000 miles of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the Earth. If those same families sent just one less holiday card, 50,000 cubic feet of paper would be saved. So how do we recycle what might otherwise be labeled as junk? Elmer’s known by all for glues of all types and much more suggests this fun craft idea. Remember to supervise.
Handmade envelope
What you’ll need:
- Elmer’s Washable School Glue™,
- Envelope (To Use as a Pattern),
- Wrapping Paper (or Magazine, Grocery Bag, etc.),
- Scissors,
- Pencil,
- Cardboard,
- White Construction Paper
1. Use a regular envelope as a pattern for this project. Carefully separate the flaps of the envelope.
2. Place the envelope on a piece of cardboard. Trace around it to make a sturdy pattern. Cut out the pattern.
3. Place the pattern on a sheet of wrapping paper, a magazine page, or a grocery bag—whatever you would like to make your envelope out of.
4. Trace the pattern on the paper and cut out the shape.
5. Use the regular envelope as a guide. Fold your paper into an envelope. Glue the flaps into place. Let the glue dry completely.
6. Cut out small pieces of white construction paper to use as mailing labels. Glue the white paper to the front of the envelope. Let the glue dry completely.
