Welcome to 2018 and our 24th year publishing the Upstate Gardeners’ Journal. 2017 was an excellent year for us, thanks largely to Debbie Eckerson and Cathy Monrad, my two right arms. It had its moments of sadness, though, like any year— the Rochester Civic Garden Center’s announcement that it would soon dissolve being chief among them. With the new year came another loss when Ted “Doc Lilac” Collins died unexpectedly early in January. Ted was one of my best friends and my biggest supporter, cheerleader, and (at times) critic. To be honest, I still can’t really believe he’s gone. But he gave me enough advice and ideas to last a long, long time, and I’ll continue to strive to make him proud.
