Frank Lloyd Wright designed just one building in Rochester. “There’s a certain serenity in the house,” explains Jane Parker, who owns East Boulevard’s Boynton House with her husband, Fran Cosentino. The eye-catching private home was built in 1908 in Wright’s signature Prairie Style for Edward E. Boynton, a lantern salesman, and his daughter Beulah. Even before the home was built, much was happening at the site. The grounds stretched across four city lots. The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation notes that Wright’s collaboration with twenty-one-year-old Beulah was “unusually fruitful.” Parker, who has become something of an expert on Wright, agrees. “Oh yes. They liked each other,” she says knowingly, noting that Wright camped out in a tent during the construction process to stay in close contact with Beulah. For her part, Beulah referred to Wright as “a genius.” She loved to entertain, so Wright made the large dining room the highlight
There’s no sign out front at 695 South Clinton Avenue, only windows covered in dark lace curtains. But stepping in through the side door, you know you’re in the right place: the Cheshire Lounge, a stylish but welcoming bar with an abundance of atmosphere and charm. “I think we got the reputation of a speakeasy because I don’t know how to market,” says owner Evvy Fanning. Her focus is on quality cocktails and a friendly atmosphere where all are welcome,
Chortke has been serving the best Persian food in a fast casual setting for more than five years now. A few months ago, the management decided to pivot into the upscale/fine dining space—a natural fit for the rich and lavish origins of Persian cuisine. They closed the Village Gate restaurant over the fall to completely revamp the interior and the menu in order to bring Rochester an (actually) new take on the upscale dining experience. I am not one to
During the mid-1960s a new kind of music burst forth from our area’s garages, barns, church halls, and the back rooms of taverns. Played by adolescent baby boomer boys, it had all of the sophistication of juvie: primitive, strident, nasal, and pounding, with a fuzz guitar made of electricity itself and a beat that struck like a riding crop. Those years were a wonderful, horrible time in America and a transformative era in popular music. First with the rise of
Years ago, I wrote an article titled “Charity is easy . . . especially when wine is involved” for a Rochester publication. I stand by this message, as I like to incorporate giving back into everyday life as a way of making it more practical. People think giving back requires a grand gesture, all of the dollars, and time commitments lengthier than long-term relationships. I understand that feeling, because I’ve been there. Once upon a time, I didn’t know where
A one-of-a-kind gem in Pittsford Garden tours will take you to a lot of pretty outdoor spaces, but there aren’t many like Jed Fox’s. “I don’t know how much I’m allowed to brag,” but in recent years, many different garden tours have featured his Pittsford garden, he says. He’s received comments like “finest private garden I’ve ever seen” and “I’ve gone to public arboretums, and you put them to shame.” Fox, a dentist, has created, expanded, and maintained the garden himself since moving into the house in 1982. He and his wife, Peggy, chose the home because it was the only one available in Pittsford that was zoned for a home office. The home happened to have an acre and a half of land, and he set to work turning all that space into a one-of-a-kind parklike yard with ponds, a Zen garden, and a children’s garden. He dug the
