A piece of cake

Weddings. The theme, the venue, the music—all important elements when planning your special day. But where a couple’s personality can often shine through most is in the design of the wedding cake. The old days of plain white wedding cakes are long gone, and many modern couples opt for new and vibrant bakery presentation for their big day. Some will do cupcakes or donut displays for easier handling while others will add statuettes of their family (especially furry ones!) on their desserts. Two Rochester bakers have raised the wedding dessert bar to new heights. Both Maryam Salah and Morgan Wilson have one thing in common that makes them stand out—originality. Both women make made-to-order cakes and cupcakes but go one step further by taking the time to connect with their clients in order to make their wedding dessert dreams come true. Nubian Desserts Maryam Salah started Nubian Desserts in Rochester during quarantine. While she had more time on her hands, she wanted to share the passion she has for cooking and baking with people in the community. She takes inspiration from British bakers and baking shows and focuses on her bespoke cupcakes in addition to her cakes. Salah says the British origin of her cupcakes is what sets her apart from other bakeries in Rochester. “Cupcakes are what put me on the map,” Salah says. “I noticed that this trend in the baking world wasn’t in Rochester. When you go to London, you see bespoke cupcakes. I wanted to bring that experience to Rochester, so other people could experience it.” But Salah is versatile and can craft a traditional wedding cake, too. She enjoys using floral designs in an array of fun colors and loves being able to bring classic characters and films to life for her clients. She takes

Twice upon a dream

On a crisp Saturday night last November, the Rascals played to an enthusiastic crowd at the Kodak Theater. Clips of the band in their 1960s prime were projected in the background. At center stage was Felix Cavaliere, the band’s lead singer and keyboardist. To his side and seated was guitarist Gene Cornish, who last appeared with the Rascals in Rochester in 2013. As it so happened, it was also the birthday of Cornish’s mother, Ada, who passed away in 2006.

Rochester Cocktail Revival turns ten

For the past ten years, Rochester Cocktail Revival has been dedicated to bringing back the lost art of craft cocktails. It all started in 2013 when founder Chuck Cerankosky, along with a few others in the local bar scene, noticed an opportunity for a cocktail resurgence and that Rochester was a prime location for it. “There was a small group of us, about six different bar owners at the time, and we realized back in 2013 that we had this

The medium is the message

In black and white: Jenn Libby Today photography is more accessible than ever. Almost every functioning member of society is carrying a phone in their pocket that boasts camera quality that rivals that of Nikon, Canon, or Kodak. Gone are the days of sifting through photo albums to see the finite ten to twenty baby pictures that have been archived, replaced with ten to twenty almost identical shots of a candid moment stored in the cloud along with 758 other

Summer state of mind

As our uniquely upstate seasons continue to change, summer is ready to show its joyous face once more. That means warmer temps, longer days, and cooler looks are all on the horizon. Yes, you would be correct in thinking of summer as the warm period ranging from June to September in the Northern Hemisphere. Around here, though, it’s much more than just that. It is a feeling. A skate session. Open windows. Barefoot soccer. Loud music. Finger Lakes wine. The

“You Press the Button, We Do the Rest”

More than ninety years after his death, the legacy of iconic entrepreneur, inventor, and founder of Eastman Kodak, George Eastman, lives on in Rochester. Known as “the father of popular photography,” Eastman created a dry film that was both transparent and flexible, simplifying what was previously a complex print-making process and increasing its affordability for consumers. His first mass-marketed camera, the Kodak Camera, cost $25 when it was released in 1888. A decade later, in 1900, Kodak created the Brownie

Future Past

Once again CMAC brought a legend to the Greater Rochester area. On September 3 the one and only Duran Duran brought their all to the stage in Canandaigua. The evening started with the opening act, Niles Rodgers and Chic. Many people know their fabulous 1978 disco hit “Le Freak,” but did you know that Rodgers also helped write and produce some of pop’s most iconic songs? Rodgers and Chic played not only some of their best music, but these hits, too. When they performed a medley of these songs–Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” and more–the crowd went wild with excitement.  Bastille was supposed to take the stage next, but illness unfortunately forced them to cancel. But when the pause between acts ended, Duran Duran’s performance more than made up for it. They opened with “Night Boat,” just as some fans predicted they would. This song led into “Wild Boys,”  and from there every eighties baby felt transported back to a time when we all waited for those MTV video countdowns. Remember those iconic Duran Duran videos like “Rio” and “Notorious?” Well, the incredible large-screen displays in the background made every song feel like a live-version music video. Close up of wolf eyes for “Hungry like the Wolf” anyone?  Duran Duran’s next album, Danse Macbre, will drop in late October. For a more detailed breakdown of the concert and the set list, read this great review by Just One More Concert. It was the perfect show to end the 2023 season at CMAC, and we cannot wait to see what is on deck for 2024.
