Nick's Picks: Park Ave Fest

Its late Wednesday night while I write this, early Thursday morning technically, and my hands are trembling with excitement over my keyboard. After waiting almost a full year, it’s finally back, the Park Avenue Fest, my obvious pick of the week.

The description of Nick’s Picks says that this is not a best-of list. So, I don’t want to call Park Ave Fest the best Rochester festival, but, well, I’m not saying that it’s not.

Saturday, August 5, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, August 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Park Avenue will become the epicenter of Rochester. This mile-and- a-quarter stretch from Alexander Street to Culver Road closes off to vehicular traffic and becomes a one-of- a-kind shopping experience with more than 350 artists and exhibitors selling arts, crafts, fashion, and more.

As is the case with any good festival, food will be omnipresent in the form of vendors, food trucks, and dozens of Park Avenue restaurants that call this neighborhood home year-round.

The people and architecture of Park Avenue are as big a part of this festival, as any art or exhibits. House parties line the side streets off of Park Ave. Rochester culture, and smiles are at an all-time high during this two-day event.

While there is not any official literature on this subject, Park Avenue Fest veterans know that this event is not only a showcase for art, food, and crafts, but for dogs. That’s right, dogs, good boys and good girls. Park Ave fest is the Super Bowl for dog owners in Rochester. Pooches big and small come out in hoards to compete in an unofficial cutest dog contest. Spoiler alert: Everybody wins.
