When Courtney Smith was picking out clothes for our What2Where article, she knew she just had to incorporate style elements from the recent hit movie Barbie. I wasn’t quite sure what she would bring to the set, but when she walked into the photo shoot dressed in head-to-toe pink sequins, I knew these were going to be special photos. She managed to combine the fun and sparkle of the holiday season with the deliciously pink world of Barbie. We cranked up the cotton candy machine, and I asked Smith all about Barbie, fashion, and dressing for the holidays.
What Barbie are you?
I am “Colorful, Funky, Make People Feel Good Boutique Owner” Barbie!
People have been going wild over the Barbie movie, and pink is all over the fashion scene. Tell me why the Barbie trend blends well with dressing up for the holidays.
I think the Barbie trend works well for the holidays because it will be here for a while. Let’s keep riding the Barbie wave! There are so many shades of pink to add to your wardrobe to feel festive. Just adding a pop of jewel-toned magenta or going full on hot pink from head to toe can be such a fun way to express yourself for the holidays. Just play with it and have fun showing off your inner Barbie and powerful self. Who doesn’t like adding some glitz, sparkle, faux leather, and fur to a holiday outfit?
What are some of your favorite tips about picking out holiday wear?
Get pieces that make you feel good. You can jazz up outfits with accessories, too. A cute purse and jewelry always fit! I love adding a cozy statement coat or sweater and playing around with different textures or bold colors. Also, a matching set is easy and perfect for any time of year, just pop it on and you are ready to party.
How can people embrace the glossy, sparkly fun of the winter holidays and the Barbie trend while still being themselves?
You gotta just have fun with it. The way you feel in your outfit is crucial. If it makes you want to strut, then wear it! When you are happy in your outfit it brings out that confidence boost that is so empowering.
Many of my customers say “When will I ever wear this?” or “I have nowhere to wear this.” I say, “How about LIFE? Life is the event!”
Life is too short to wear boring clothing. Express yourself! It always lifts my mood when I add color or print to my attire. We work hard and deserve that dose of happiness from time to time–or every day. Why not?
