Fatima Bayram runs Silk, Rochester’s premier bridal fashion service

Here comes the bridal boutique

Walking into Silk Bridal Boutique, a longtime fixture on South Clinton Avenue in Rochester, I am greeted by high ceilings, tall casement windows, an ornate floral-themed chandelier, and several flush-mounted lights. In front of me, a trifold mirror sits on a raised platform surrounded by high-fashion magazines, an assortment of sparkly jewelry, and an ethereal wall of bridal veils. To the left, a polished silver serving cart holds fifteen identical champagne glasses artfully arranged beside an iridescent green bottle chilling in a bucket of ice. The pristine white rug beneath me reflects the space’s overall aesthetic: contemporary, neutral, and clean.

Silk Bridal Boutique is owned by Rochester native Fatima Bayram along with her younger brother, Tufan Bayram. The siblings have had fashion running through their veins since birth. “I began sewing at eleven,” says Bayram. “My first job was apprenticing for my father [then owner of Thimble Tailor]. At sixteen, I tailored my first wedding dress.”

Bayram’s father, Hasan Bayram, immigrated with his wife, Bayram’s mother, Songul Bayram, to the United States from Ankara, Turkey, in 1982. In 1989, Hasan started Thimble Tailor after holding a position at Hickey Freeman, a well-known American suit manufacturer. To this day, Hasan remains a pivotal figure in both the Bayram family business and the Rochester fashion community at large.

After studying fashion at Genesee Community College, Bayram acquired Thimble Tailor in 2007. In the decades since, the Bayram family has expanded the shop into a fashion conglomerate that includes Thimble Tailor, Silk Bridal Boutique, and Paislee Boutique, each playing a unique role in serving clients. While Thimble Tailor specializes in cleanings, fittings, and alterations, Paislee Boutique features practical, timeless clothing, and Silk Bridal Boutique is the bridal fashion leg of the organization.

“We love being part of the [Rochester] community,” says Bayram. “I had a great childhood, and if I could do it all over again, I would choose to be raised in this diverse environment.” Silk Bridal Boutique prides itself on being a safe, inclusive space for all clients, including LGBTQ+ individuals. “We welcome all kinds of love,” she says. “[Over the years], the wedding industry has become less traditional.”

When a client enters Silk Bridal Boutique, they are not getting just a dress but an entire experience. “When you buy from us, it’s truly a full-on concierge service,” says Bayram. “From expert alterations to personalized care and our white-glove delivery service, we make sure every detail is handled, so our brides feel completely taken care of leading up to their wedding day.” After the wedding, Silk Bridal Boutique cleans and preserves the dress.

Delivering a dress and styling a bride on their wedding day is Bayram’s favorite aspect of her role. “Dressing a bride is a very intimate, vulnerable moment. It’s a lot of emotions: anxiety, nerves, excitement.”

Bayram notes that for many Silk Bridal Boutique clients, the professional relationship extends beyond the wedding. “I’ve styled brides for their wedding and then continued to work with them afterwards. Sometimes, once brides have kids, we collaborate on outfits for first communions, recitals, school dances, and even graduations. I love experiencing all chapters of life with legacy clients.”

I asked Bayram what she wishes clients knew before coming into the shop. “I’d like brides to keep an open mind,” she says. She explains that people often fall in love with a specific idea or picture and become disappointed when the real-life version doesn’t match their vision. “We will always find a dress for your dream,” says Bayram, “but we want you to connect with the attire organically, even if it’s different from what you originally thought you wanted.”

Unlike many bridal boutiques, Silk Bridal Boutique does not charge appointment fees for bridal viewings. “We want brides to bring their families, explore the space, and truly experience the dresses,” says Bayram. “For us, approachability matters just as much as luxury.”

As far as the future of Silk Bridal Boutique, Bayram already has a vision in mind. “Five years from now, I want to start a collection of my own and do more designs–the creative side,” she says. “For years, I’ve been building a business, going through the highs and lows and learning to adapt.”

Silk Bridal Boutique has remained resilient through challenging periods such as the COVID-19 pandemic, when dream weddings were postponed and  businesses faced unprecedented emotional and financial strain. Bayram expresses deep gratitude for the boutique’s ability to persevere during those uncertain times and credits her family as being central to the success of the business throughout her decades-long career in fashion.

“My brother is my best friend; he’s my ride or die,” she says. Tufan is her business partner and the driving force behind the groom and menswear division of the company. Known for his strong sense of style and ability to connect with clients, he plays an integral role in shaping the overall growth of the family business.

Although technically retired, Fatima and Tufan’s father, Hasan, remains actively involved in the company by mentoring new tailors and collaborating on creative projects, while their mother, Songul, supports the family’s entrepreneurial spirit with endless encouragement and exceptional cooking. Fatima herself also has a daughter, Miriam Bayram.

Silk Bridal Boutique is a family business with global appeal. “All of our items can be customized and made to measure,” says Bayram. “We carry the top six lines in the bridal industry.” This includes WONA Concept, a popular Ukrainian dress brand known for its elegance and attention to detail.

“After a decade, I might not remember a person’s name,” says Bayram, “but I will always remember the dress!”
