January marks the start of a brand new year, so let’s enjoy each and every day by celebrating these special and unique holidays. We all know about Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday holiday but did you know that January is Braille Literacy Month or that Penguin Awareness Day is January 20th? There’s lots to do and learn about in the fabulous month of January so don’t miss a thing!

1. Don’t sit around doing nothing on New Year’s Day – January 1st, visit our calendar to find family fun activities.
2. Trivia Day is January 4th. Check out some interesting facts at your local museums and create your own trivia contest.
3. January is National Oatmeal Month. Did you know oatmeal is rated #1 among breakfast food? Check out our yummy oatmeal recipe and for more ideas visit the Quaker Oats website.
4. National Bird Day is celebrated on January 5th, why not visit the Montezuma Audubon Center to learn how birds survive the winter?
5. Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friend’s Day is one of those unique holidays that no one seems to know about. If you find a puddle that’s not frozen over on January 11th, step and splash!
6. The month of January is also National Soup Month. Check out our recipe for a delicious hardy winter-time soup.
7. January 14th is Dress Up Your Pet Day! Use your imagination and dress your pet. If you don’t have a pet why not visit Lollypop Farm to visit pets that need a good home?

8. Appreciate a Dragon Day is January 16th. If you don’t have a dragon, read about them at your local library.
9. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated nationwide on the third Monday in January. Visit The Strong National Museum of Play on Monday, January 16th to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Enjoy special performances celebrating black history presented by Bright Star Theatre.
10. Winnie the Pooh Day (the birthday of Winnie’s author A.A. Milne) is celebrated on January 18th. Find out more about Winnie here.

12. January 20th is Penguin Awareness Day and what better place to see and learn about penguins….the Seneca Park Zoo!
