Strasenburgh Planetarium

Children and adults alike have the opportunity to explore new experiences featuring the latest in space as well as other inspiring shows at the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) Strasenburgh Planetarium this summer. Two new star shows, Animals in the Sky for ages three to six and Other Worlds Like Ours for older children and adults, join other favorites. Animals in the Sky opens June 4 while Other Worlds Like Ours opens June 25. In addition, the classic giant-screen filmTo Fly! soars across the dome for the first time starting June 27.

From giant-screen films and laser shows, to cutting-edge star shows and telescope viewing of the real sky, a variety of shows are available appealing to all ages. Details are included below:

Other Worlds Like Ours

NEW Opens June 25 For older children and adults – Are there solar systems around other stars? Do these systems have planets like Earth? Real discoveries are pouring in. We seem closer than ever to finding a planet like Earth. In the second half of the show, the Planetarium’s giant star projector rises into action, and an expert presenter conducts a live tour of stars, constellations and planets of the current sky.

Face of Earth

Closes June 18 For older children and adults – The latest and most beautiful photos of Earth, taken by Commander Scott Kelly during his year aboard the International Space Station,alongside some of his inspiring daily Twitter messages, projected at giant size with a musical soundtrack. In the second half of the show, the Planetarium’s giant star projector rises into action, and an expert presenter conducts a live tour of stars, constellations and planets of the current sky.

Animals in the Sky

NEW Opens June 4 

For ages 3 to 6 – Take a seat in the Star Theater and find animal shapes in the clouds in the indoor sky. Then “Carl,” the friendly star projector, shows us animal constellations among the stars of the night sky, including dogs, a swan, an eagle, a lion and a whale! Finally, on an imaginary trip to the moon, we find no animals-they are all living on Earth.

My PlanetsOn-going show 

For ages 3 to 6 – A gentle introduction to the Planetarium with colorful pictures and memorable facts. Meet “Carl,” the friendly star projector. See worlds in our solar system as they appear in the sky and through a telescope.

The Sky TonightOn-going show For all ages – Solid-state lasers guide you through the magnificent Planetarium starfield. Take a concise tour of the stars, constellations and planets in the current sky.

To Fly!

NEW Opens June 27

For all ages – Find thrill in a classic journey through the history of flight, from early balloon flights to 20th-century space missions.This film was produced in 1976 for the opening of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, where it still inspires crowds daily. Later, the Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry for its enduring importance in American culture. Now it’s on Rochester’s planetarium dome for the first time.

SATURDAY NIGHT LASER

Adults: $7 for one show/$11 for both, back-to-back

Brilliant laser patterns dance to classic rock music on the Planetarium’s great sound system.

70s Laser at 8:15pm and The Beatles in Laser Light at 9:30pm on Saturday nights in April. Check www.rmsc.org for upcoming shows. Sponsored by City NewspaperFor adults and young adults. Children under 5 not admitted.

FREE TELESCOPE VIEWING

Clear Saturday Nights from dark-10pm  

Climb 60 steps at the back of the planetarium to view the sky through telescopes operated by knowledgeable volunteers from the Astronomy Section of the Rochester Academy of Science (ASRAS), the leading local astronomy club. Call ahead 585.697.1945.
