Montezuma Audubon Center

Surrounded by hiking, birding, snowshoeing and cross country ski trails that wind through 450 acres of managed marshes, grasslands, woods, ponds and creek habitats, the Montezuma Audubon Center (MAC) is the ideal place to enjoy some time outdoors with your family.The MAC, a state-owned facility operated through a cooperative agreement between the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the National Audubon Society, opened in 2007 and is designed to meet the US Green Building Council’s criteria to achieve Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design certification, which incorporates “green” elements that reduce the building’s impact on the environment.

The 5,200 square foot facility houses a large exhibit area, classroom, nature store, offices, auditorium, and a meeting room. Additionally, the MAC is the gateway to the Montezuma Wetlands Complex, one of the largest conservation projects in the nation for reclamation of important wildlife and wetland habitat. To highlight the complex as a crucial migration stopover point for migrating waterfowl in the northeast, the Center offers a variety of themed programs that focus on wetland ecology, migration, and habitat restoration and improvement. Audubon New York operates the Center and conducts numerous family and public programs, school, scout, and home school fieldtrips, and outreach programs. Visitors will be able to spend a full day exploring a great diversity of plant and animal life in and around the MAC.
