George Eastman Museum

George Eastman Museum

Located on the estate of George Eastman, this museum is the pioneer of popular photography and motion picture film. Founded in 1947 as an independent nonprofit institution, it is the world’s oldest photography museum and one of the oldest film archives. The museum holds unparalleled collections—encompassing several million objects—in the fields of photography, cinema, and photographic and cinematographic technology, and photographically illustrated books. The institution is also a longtime leader in film preservation and photographic conservation.

There is always something new and different to engage, educate or entertain you at the Eastman Museum. At all times, at least three temporary exhibitions on photography and cinema are available in the main exhibition galleries.

Visit with the kids and show them George Eastman’s historic mansion and gardens, where they can see how this visionary entrepreneur and philanthropist lived for almost thirty years during the early twentieth century—one of only two National Historic Landmarks in Monroe County. The home is filled with amazing period furniture, a large winding staircase, and many of the rooms kept in tact as they were while Eastman lived there.

Especially for kids is the Discovery Room where hands-on activities related to photography and motion pictures are available to assist in film fun and exploration.

See a movie. Dryden Kids Sunday matinees (FREE for 17 & under) provide their youngest film audiences (and their parents) with awareness that great entertainment is often also great art, and a remarkable tool for both understanding and finding our way in the world.

Catch an outdoor Garden Vibe event during July and August and pack a picnic dinner to enjoy while listening to great music in the glorious gardens.
