The Herkimer Diamonds are not diamonds, as their name implies, but beautiful double-terminated quartz crystals. These phenomenal gemstones are believed to be close to five hundred million years old.
With your admission ticket you and your family get an all day prospecting admission ticket, instructional 7-minute video to watch before entering the mining area, an all day museum entrance pass, use of hammers, and a bag to hold all of your amazing finds. You don’t need to be an expert; treasures can be found by people of all ages! Young prospectors can casually look along the area and pick up treasures that are already dug up while older members of the family can dig through the rubble using hammers and chisels. If you are lucky you may find something extraordinary — perhaps your crystal will have bits of black coal within or maybe your special specimen will contain a water bubble!
